Install the app

Install Nuits Receipts on a phone or computer so it opens in its own window, and share receipts into it from Android.

Updated

Use this guide to put Nuits Receipts on your phone’s home screen or your computer’s dock, and to send receipt files to it from other Android apps. The installed app opens in its own window, with its own icon and name. There is no app store: the browser installs it from your own copy.

Prerequisites

  • A deployed copy you can sign in to. See Deploy your own copy.
  • A browser that can install web apps.
  • For sharing: an Android phone with the app installed.

Install it

  1. Open your copy and sign in

Open your copy’s address in the browser on the device, and sign in with the password or through Cloudflare Access as usual.

  2. Install it from the browser

Use your browser’s Install or Add to Home Screen option. The app has no install button of its own.

  3. Open it

Open the app from its icon. It opens on Home, in its own window without the browser’s address bar.

The icon’s label is the app name, APP_NAME, when that name is 16 characters or fewer, so the default “Nuits Receipts” shows in full. A longer name is cut to its first word, or to 16 characters when that word is longer. If your system lists shortcuts for an app icon, the app offers one: Add a receipt, which opens Add.

If you serve the app under a path, such as /app, the installed app covers that path only. See Serve the app under a path.

With Cloudflare Access

iOS fetches the home screen icon, and the browser may fetch the manifest, without your Access session. Behind Access those requests land on the sign-in page, so the icon shows as a blank tile or a screenshot. In Zero Trust, add a second self-hosted Access application with a single Bypass policy for Everyone that covers only the icon and manifest paths, for example with the app under /app:

  • <host>/app/apple-touch-icon.png
  • <host>/app/icons/*
  • <host>/app/favicon.svg
  • <host>/app/manifest.webmanifest

Access applies the more specific paths first, so everything else stays behind your existing Access application. The Worker answers these paths without sign-in, and they hold no data: the manifest carries only the app name, its colours and its own paths.

Know what works offline

The installed app needs a connection, as the browser version does. It keeps no receipts, pages or settings on the device.

When the device has no network and you open a page, the app shows You’re offline with “This app needs a connection. Nothing is saved on this device.” and a Try again link. Select Try again once you are back online.

The app’s service worker never handles a page while you are online, so it does not get in the way of the password prompt or the Cloudflare Access sign-in.

Share a receipt into the app on Android

  1. Share the file

In another app, such as your file manager or your mail app, share a receipt PDF or photo and pick the app in the share sheet. The app takes PDF, PNG, JPEG and WebP files, up to 10 at a time. Other file types are left out, and files after the tenth are dropped.

  2. Say what the files are

The app opens on Add with the files already in the form and the message “2 shared files ready. Choose what they are, then press Upload.” Under What are these?, choose Receipts and bills, Invoices you sent or Other documents.

  3. Add them

Select Upload. Nothing is uploaded until you do. Each file is then read as if you had chosen it on the page. See Add receipts.

If Add opens with no files, the share reached the app before its service worker was running, and nothing was kept. Choose the files on that page instead.

Check that it worked

  • The app opens from its icon in a window of its own.
  • After sharing, Add lists each shared file as “Ready to add”.
  • After Upload, the files appear in Receipts To do or on Home, as after any upload.
